what a way to start:
Bonds sets new home run record Barry Bonds has hit his 756th home run, beating Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755 home runs in American Major League baseball, set in 1976. The San Francisco Giants slugger broke the record in front of his home crowd, hitting the run off a pitch from Washington Nationals' Mike Bacsik. His achievement has been overshadowed by claims he has used steroids. The left-handed Bonds has never tested positive for drug use, and denies having done so knowingly. But rumours have persisted since his home run tally took off after he turned 35, moving past the legendary Babe Ruth into second place in May last year with his 715th career home run. "Thank you very much. I got to thank all of you, all the fans here in San Francisco. It's been fantastic," said Bonds, after he crossed home plate. He then burst into tears, as he acknowledged his late father, Bobby. "To my dad," he said, pointing to the sky. "Thank you for everything." Hank Aaron was not present to see his record broken, but he sent a tape message of congratulation. "It is a great accomplishment which required skill, longevity and determination," Aaron said. In September, 2003 US federal agents raided a nutritional supplements company in the suburbs of San Francisco. The company, Balco, was found to be supplying performance enhancing drugs to top American athletes. Among those arrested and subsequently jailed was Barry Bonds' trainer. Bonds himself has always denied wrongdoing and has never failed a drugs test. This post has been edited by cornholio: Aug 8 2007, 10:50 PM |

I was about to start this thread as Barry Bonds has finally broke the record. As you said, what a WAY TO START. What a great day in Baseball. Hank's record finally broken after 33 years. Lets see how long will Bonds stay as # 1, My guess it'll take A Rod over 10 years to cross Bonds. Commissioner's absence conveyed the message that how he feels about Mr. Bonds and his new record. Here is the Video. This post has been edited by Küðï Þµñjðßåñ: Aug 8 2007, 10:51 PM |

Commissioner's absence is understood, even I'm convinced he did take steroids. He was thin and skinny in 20's and then suddenly became muscular in his 30's!!! But, even others during that time must be using those drugs. So it's difficult to say!
MLB Ya, with these crucial losses blue jays are done. With current Yankees form Wild Card is very difficult. btw: how'z the title of the thread? do u suggest any changes or is it fine? |

Jays Vs Yankess Heating up ![]() It's been very frustrating watching the Blue Jays over the past few weeks. At home, they look like one of the best teams in baseball. On the road, not so much, dropping winnable games to the lowly likes of the White Sox and Devil Rays. And then, with the team riding the high of an eight-game win streak at Rogers Centre, the Yankees roll into town for a three-gamer and a photo op with David Beckham. For half of the series opener, the Jays matched the Yankees pitch for pitch and hit for hit. Included in the action was Jesse Litsch finally evening the score with Alex Rodriguez for his 'bush league' calling off of Howie Clark on a pop up back on May 30th The 22-year-old rookie right-hander did something that should have happened when the Jays visited the Yankees after the All-Star break: Litsch fired his first pitch of the second behind the knees of the $25.2 million a season superstar to let him know that the Jays hadn't forgotten about what had happened when he last visited Toronto. But then on Tuesday night, just when we thought that the 'A-Rod Affair' was finally behind us, Josh Towers re-ignited the powder keg by drilling Rodriguez in the calf, apparently by accident, causing the benches and bullpens to clear while both players stalked towards each other. As is usually the case in basebrawls, it was much ado about nothing; with most playing peacemakers while a few chirped from behind the pile. |

![]() Richardson signs with Sens The 38-year-old signed with his hometown Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, agreeing to a one-year, two-way contract. Richardson had three assists and 16 penalty minutes in 27 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. The 19-year NHL veteran was originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round (seventh overall) in 1987. He went on to play for Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia, Columbus and Toronto again before joining Tampa Bay. In 1,339 career NHL games, he has 33 goals, 159 assists and 2,012 penalty minutes. "Luke is a character player who brings experience to our club," Senators GM Bryan Murray said in a statement. "We feel he can be a leader who can be an great example for our young defenceman to learn from." Richardson also comes with a modest pride tag. He made US$500,000 last season. |

Life-changing catch
![]() Somewhere in this pile of fans is the luckiest 22-year-old in San Francisco. With the crack of the bat a brief stillness settled over the right-centre field bleachers at AT&T Park as Barry Bonds' record-breaking homer rocketed toward the crowd. Then the scrum was on. As the specially marked baseball landed a few rows up, dozens of fans wrestled for it and the promise of riches it carried. Suddenly, the metal bleachers vibrated with energy. Grunts, cheers and the cries of frightened children broke the silence as parents sought to shield their youngsters from the gotohell. In the middle of it all was 22-year-old New Yorker Matt Murphy, who emerged from beneath the pile holding the ball Bonds hit for career home run No. 756. His face was bloodied and his clothes stretched and torn from his battle in the bleachers. A team of San Francisco police officers moved in, extracted Murphy from the crowd, and quickly led him through a tunnel and into a secure room. As he high-fived other fans, Murphy, wearing a New York Mets jersey and cap, slid the ball into the back pocket of his plaid Bermuda shorts. Reporters screamed out questions, but all he managed to say was, "I'm Matt Murphy from Queens, N.Y." "I just hope he didn't get hurt," Bonds said after the game, which the Giants lost 8-6 to the Washington Nationals. He said he had no interest in getting the ball back for himself. "I don't want the ball," Bonds said. "I've never believed a home run ball belonged to the player. If he caught it, it's his." Murphy and a friend were en route to Australia and in San Francisco for a one-day layover, a Giants spokesman said. They purchased tickets just before the game. He and the friend, dressed in New York Yankees regalia, were razzed by nearby Giants fans. "Hey, this isn't New York!," one shouted. Murphy and his friend just laughed it off before settling into their seats. Murphy declined to make himself available to the media. Baseball memorabilia experts have pegged the ball's value at US$400,000 to $500,000. That's well below the $3 million fetched by the ball Mark McGwire hit to break Roger Maris' single-season home run record in 1998, but still a hefty sum. ![]() Richardson signs with Sens. that's good info, are there any European superstars coming to NHL this season. I did my undergrad from Russia (thats where I got the football bug from) and was fortunate to watch 3 matches from Hockey World Cup 2000, St Petersburg Russia. Next year when I go home I'll scan the photos I took then and post them. I watched my fav. player Yashin and russian rocket Pavel Bure play. The funniest story in Europe then was one of the big prizes - the cup winning team was supposed to get a big vacation in Czech Republic with their families. Guess who won..................... |
